Background of the study
The introduction of virtual laboratories has transformed science education by allowing students to conduct experiments and simulations remotely, without the need for physical laboratory space or materials. Virtual laboratories are particularly valuable in secondary schools, where access to physical laboratories and scientific equipment may be limited, especially in rural or underfunded areas (Olawale & Adeyemi, 2023). In Ilorin South, Kwara State, secondary schools often face challenges in providing practical science education due to constraints in funding, infrastructure, and teacher expertise. Virtual laboratories offer an innovative solution by providing interactive and realistic simulations of scientific experiments, which help students to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Despite their advantages, the effectiveness of virtual laboratories in improving science education in Ilorin South depends on factors such as the quality of the simulations, students' digital literacy, the availability of necessary technology, and teacher involvement in guiding the learning process. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of virtual laboratories in science education in secondary schools in Ilorin South and identify the challenges and factors that impact their successful implementation.

Statement of the problem
While virtual laboratories provide an opportunity for hands-on learning in science subjects, their adoption and effectiveness in secondary schools in Ilorin South have been hindered by challenges such as limited access to digital devices, inadequate training for teachers, and lack of student engagement. These barriers prevent the full potential of virtual laboratories from being realized, affecting their ability to enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts. This study will examine the factors affecting the effectiveness of virtual laboratories in Ilorin South’s secondary schools.

Objectives of the study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of virtual laboratories in enhancing science education in secondary schools in Ilorin South.

  2. To identify the challenges faced by students and teachers in using virtual laboratories for science education.

  3. To explore the impact of virtual laboratories on students' understanding of scientific concepts and their problem-solving abilities.

Research questions

  1. How effective are virtual laboratories in enhancing science education in secondary schools in Ilorin South?

  2. What challenges do students and teachers face in using virtual laboratories in Ilorin South?

  3. What impact do virtual laboratories have on students' understanding of scientific concepts and their problem-solving skills?

Significance of the study
This study will contribute to the understanding of how virtual laboratories can enhance science education in secondary schools, especially in regions with limited access to physical laboratory resources. The findings will be valuable for educators, policymakers, and educational technology developers in improving the integration of virtual laboratories into science curricula in secondary schools.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to secondary schools in Ilorin South Local Government Area, Kwara State, and focuses on the use of virtual laboratories in science education. It does not include schools outside Ilorin South or other forms of digital learning tools.

Definitions of terms

  • Virtual laboratories: Online platforms that simulate laboratory experiments and activities for students in various science subjects.

  • Science education: The teaching and learning of scientific concepts, experiments, and applications in secondary schools.

  • Problem-solving abilities: The capacity to analyze, evaluate, and find solutions to scientific problems or scenarios.
